Short-Term Health Insurance

While you may have excellent health coverage at home, chances are your health care provider may not cover you on your trip overseas. You may need to purchase short-term health insurance designed specifically to cover travel. Short term medical travel insurance is a type of insurance policy that protects you and your family against unexpected illness or accidents which can happen during your overseas vacation. It’s called short term because the coverage period may be anywhere from 5 days to 3 years. Medical coverage includes doctor’s consultations, intensive care, emergency room services, hospitalization, emergency medical evacuation and repatriation and coverage for accidental death and dismemberment. If your trip involves activities such as jet skiing, scuba diving, mountaineering, etc., you may also need to add a hazardous sports or extreme sports rider. Check which companies offer insurance plans that will cover health care expenses incurred overseas including emergency services such as medical evacuations.
