The credit crunch has definitely affected everyone in the US and anywhere around the globe. Due to this fact, fraudsters are putting their acts together to collect more cash. Travel insurance frauds are on the rise. Small time their modus operandi can be, but these people tend to make our lives even harder. Some holiday travelers are filing claims on their belongings, which actually were not stolen. In some cases, these were actually stolen but they claim a much higher worth of the said items. Pre booked holidays are common. Some travelers pre booked holiday vacations but are finding themselves unable to go on with the travel because of financial issues. So what they do, to be able to claim their initial deposit for the holiday package, they go to a doctor and come out with tons of absurd sickness and conditions so they can be issued medical certifications that they can now use to claim a full refund of the pre booking deposit fee. Insurance companies have made ways to counter these frauds. So scammers beware, if you get denied of your false claims, you’ll definitely pay for your evil ways.

While you may have excellent health coverage at home, chances are your health care provider may not cover you on your trip overseas. You may need to purchase short-term health insurance designed specifically to cover travel. Short term medical travel insurance is a type of insurance policy that protects you and your family against unexpected illness or accidents which can happen during your overseas vacation. It’s called short term because the coverage period may be anywhere from 5 days to 3 years. Medical coverage includes doctor’s consultations, intensive care, emergency room services, hospitalization, emergency medical evacuation and repatriation and coverage for accidental death and dismemberment. If your trip involves activities such as jet skiing, scuba diving, mountaineering, etc., you may also need to add a hazardous sports or extreme sports rider. Check which companies offer insurance plans that will cover health care expenses incurred overseas including emergency services such as medical evacuations.

Why do you really need to consider purchase a travel insurance?
1. Some trips are planned for a year in advance. It gives ample time for a catastrophe to happen.
2. We sometimes tend to plan trips that are expensive. Always determine the portion of the non-refundable expenses that you will lose in any case you need to return home in the middle of your trip.
3. A honeymoon trip can involve an airline trip and a cruise around the Bahamas. It is always good to ask if missing a significant flight could mean missing a cruise ship departure.
4. Any change in a package deal can also mean a change in the over-all price of the trip.

* Renew your travel insurance at least a week before you go on holiday. Don’t leave it to the last minute, otherwise you might not have time to check that the policy schedule is correct before you leave.
* If you are renewing an annual policy, clearly you don’t need to renew it until you are about to go on holiday again. But remember that annual policies cover short breaks as well, so check your policy .
* Don’t rely on the ‘free’ travel insurance which comes with some credit cards and bank accounts. These policies can be fairly basic and may not cover you for winter or extreme sports, so check the small print, and if necessary buy extra cover.

I’ve never had travel insurance, and luckily I’ve never needed it. However, we see many travel writers strongly recommending travel insurance. Perhaps if we knew which insurance company to trust…
Here’s a story about a couple who couldn’t travel because their passports arrived to slowly. Their travel insurance didn’t cover anything - quite a shock to the couple who spent money on insurance, couldn’t travel, and couldn’t collect from insurance.
I can probably afford to lose some money on a flight or something, but what really scares me is emergency medical evacuation because that can cost a fortune.
We do have a little British advice - I wish I knew of an American company that offered an annual travel insurance policy that covered me every time I travel.
